Vishay WSBS Battery Shunt Resistors

Vishay WSBS Power Metal Strip Battery Shunt Resistors are designed for applications requiring precise current measurement, offering resistance values as low as 50μΩ. The WSBS resistors provide a high power-to-size ratio and are constructed using a robust, all-welded design for durability and reliability. These shunt resistors come with very low inductance (<5nH), minimal thermal EMF (<1μV/°C), and ensure accurate performance in temperature-sensitive and high-frequency environments. Vishay Dale WSBS shunt resistors meet AEC-Q200 standards and are suitable for energy metering and other demanding applications.

Video

This TTI Tech Specs video for Vishay WSBS Power Metal Strip Battery Shunt Resistors explains that the resistors with 36W use an 8518 case size. These are available with resistances from 50µΩ to 250µΩ so you can measure current up to 848A, providing higher accuracy and lower cost than Hall Effect current sensing for battery monitoring and energy metering in automotive and industrial applications.

Today I want to talk about something big, and that’s a big power to resistor size ratio. I’m talking about the Vishay’s WSBS8518 36W power metal strip battery shunt resistors, with extremely low resistance values. Using an 8518 case size, the shunt resistors are available with resistances from 50µΩ to 250µΩ so you can measure current up to 848A, providing higher accuracy and lower cost than Hall Effect current sensing for battery monitoring and energy metering in automotive and industrial applications.

The resistive element is a solid metal manganese-copper alloy with low TCR, so you get consistent measurements across the resistor’s -65°C to +170°C operating temperature range. The WSBS8518 offers low inductance and thermal EMF, and has options for M3 or M4 tapped holes and sense terminals to simplify PCB connections, and an overmolded package with a 4-pin pluggable connector that eliminates PCB connection issues entirely.
