Honeywell BES Battery Safety Electrolyte Sensors

Honeywell Battery Safety Electrolyte Sensors (BES) are advanced automotive-grade devices designed for the early detection of venting and thermal runaway in lithium-ion battery systems. These sensors utilize a patented rate-of-change algorithm and effectively monitor electrolyte vapor, hydrogen, and carbon monoxide, providing reliable alerts during critical thermal events. The BES series electrolyte sensors come in 12V and 24V versions, are protected against siloxane poisoning, and work with different types of battery chemicals. These components operate within a temperature range from -40°C to +85°C and a humidity range from 0 to 95%RH. Typical applications include battery modules in automotive systems, electric vehicles, and sealed lithium-ion battery packs.

“Firsts” can be something to celebrate, like the first transistor or the first person in space. Then there’s First Vent. It’s the precursor to lithium-ion battery thermal runaway, so you won’t celebrate it happening, but you can celebrate detecting it with Honeywell’s automotive-grade BES Series Battery Safety Electrolyte Sensor. Backed by over 12 years of research, the BES Series is compatible with all lithium-ion battery chemistries, resists siloxane poisoning, and uses an advanced rate-of-change algorithm to detect significant changes in target gases, enabling proactive mitigation and enhanced asset protection. This is also easier to integrate and is better at preventing false positives than PPM-based sensors, providing an early warning to enact mitigation measures and reduce the risk of thermal runaway. The BES Series can also sense hydrogen and carbon monoxide gases released during thermal runaway. The sensors support 12V and 24V power systems and communicate through CAN 2.0B. Additionally, they feature an ECO Mode to help reduce power consumption.
