Honeywell TARS Series IMU Sensors

Honeywell Transportation Attitude Reference Sensors (TARS) IMUs are packaged sensor arrays designed to report vehicle angular rate, acceleration, and inclination for demanding applications in industries such as heavy-duty, off-highway transportation. TARS-IMU enables autonomous vehicle characteristics and enhances efficiency and productivity by reporting key data required to automate and monitor the movements of vehicle systems and components. The sensor fusion algorithm can be customized for specific vehicle applications through onboard firmware, allowing movement data to be filtered for the extraneous environment and vehicle movements.

TARS-IMU sensors with two sensor models for different power levels accommodate both 5V and 9V to 36V vehicle power systems. While communication is carried to the vehicle through industry-standard CAN J1939 connectivity. As a standard, TARS-IMU is calibrated on aerospace-grade rate tables at the factory to provide calibration consistency between units.

How many pull-ups can Chuck Norris do? All of them! Just like Chuck Norris, the Honeywell TARS series can do all the degrees of motion including 3 axes of translation and 3 axes of rotation. The inbuilt gyroscopes and accelerometers are all accessible via a single CAN interface which makes the TARS Series ideal for use in automotive systems, especially those involved with heavy machinery thanks to the IP protection ranging from IP67 to IP69K.

The TARS Series come in two main variations with the TARS-L operating on 5V busses and the TARS-H operating on voltages from 9V to 36V. The angular rate resolution of the gyroscope is 7.8125mdps and the acceleration resolution is 0.01m/s2 which allows for the detection of extremely fine movements. To improve the sensor output, internal filters reduce noise and vibrations, and the wide operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C allows the TARS Series to operate in all environments.
