Honeywell Battery Safety Aerosol Sensors

Honeywell Battery Safety Aerosol Sensors (BAS) Series are automotive-grade aerosol sensors that detect and report thermal runaway events in lithium-ion battery packs using the principle of light scattering. The BAS sensors measure and report aerosol concentration from 200µg/m³ to 10000µg/m³ using Controller Area Network (CAN) communication protocol and include a factory-programmed, thermal runaway warning threshold of 5000µg/m³.

The BAS sensors offer continuous and ECO operation modes. These sensors operate in ECO mode when the request pin voltage is set to low and operates in continuous mode when the request pin voltage is set to high by the Battery Management System (BMS). ECO mode is the default working mode and allows for continuous system monitoring while used in low-power mode. These sensors are ideal for use in battery pack systems for electric vehicles and energy.

Features

  • Allows early detection of thermal runaway events

Slamming your foot on the accelerator to try and jump a gap across a ravine like the Dukes of Hazzard maybe a great way to avoid the cops, but in a modern EV vehicle, that is likely to end in tears with the battery going up in flames. While such actions are certainly not encouraged, the Battery Safety Aerosol Sensors from Honeywell can certainly help to improve the safety of EVs by actively monitoring for aerosols released by Lithium Ion batteries when they become damaged. Specifically, these sensors use light scattering to identify thermal runaway in such batteries, and can detect concentrations as low as 200µg/m³, and then send a warning down a CAN bus to alert vehicle systems. To help reduce power consumption, an ECO mode is available whereby the sensor is controlled via an external pin, consuming only 0.5mA when enabled as opposed to the usual 30mA when operating.
