Honeywell GAPS & HAPS Series: Aerospace Proximity Sensor

Honeywell General Aerospace Proximity Sensors (GAPS) and Harsh Aerospace Proximity Sensors (HAPS)  are two platforms of proximity sensors that were previously known as the IHM Series. Both platforms incorporate Honeywell’s patented Integrated Health Monitoring functionality, however the products have some technical differences that allow them to be used in various aerospace applications. GAPS can be used in less harsh areas of application with some differences of electrical and environmental characteristics when compared to HAPS. Whilst, HAPS Aerospace Proximity Sensors are configurable, non-contact, hermetically sealed devices designed to sense the presence or absence of a target in harsh duty aircraft applications

Features

  • Enhanced vibration ruggedness
  • Environmentally rugged
  • Integral Health Monitoring Capability
  • Non-contact design

Applications

  • Aerospace
    • Landing gear
    • Thrust reversers
    • Flight controls
  • Medical
  • Transportation

This TTI Tech Specs video for Honeywell GAPS & HAPS Series Sensors explains Honeywell’s Aerospace Proximity Sensors are designed to sense the presence or absence of a target. They’re hermetically sealed, can operate at up to 115 degrees Celsius and can withstand up to 20 G’s of vibration and 40 G’s of shock.

There’s no better piece of equipment for measuring gaps than GAPS, by which I mean General Aerospace Proximity Sensors from Honeywell. I wonder if that pun was intentional. Honeywell’s Aerospace Proximity Sensors are designed to sense the presence or absence of a target. They’re hermetically sealed, can operate at up to 115 degrees Celsius and can withstand up to 20 G’s of vibration and 40 G’s of shock.

They also feature an integrated health monitoring capability that uses a third output to indicate the sensor’s health for reduced maintenance time and cost. They’re cylindrical in form and can have threaded or flanged connectors with inline or right-angle configurations. GAPS can sense up to 3.5 millimeters with 4 different ranges to choose from. Honeywell also offers the HAPS Harsh Application Proximity Sensors for harsh-duty aircraft applications and can sense up to 4 millimeters with 6 different ranges.
