3M 7700 Series Controlled Impedance Cables

3M 7700 Series Round Conductor Flat, Controlled Impedance Cables is a 0.025 inch flat ribbon cable that can deliver up to 20Gbps when directly soldered to a board. The cable can deliver up to 14Gbps when terminated with an Insulation Displacement Contact (IDC) connector. The performance of the 7700 series controlled impedance cables is made possible because of a revolutionary construction that not only enables outstanding throughput but also accommodates tighter folding than conventional jacketed shielded cables with minimal performance impact.

7700 series cable is an excellent choice for a wide range of controlled impedance wire-to-board applications, including automated test equipment, communications network equipment, and many others. The cable's exceptional versatility means it offers a variety of connection options. The cable is suitable for low-voltage differential signaling applications.

Features

  • 0.025 inch centerline spacing means the cable can be terminated to 0.050 inch spaced IDC connectors using a standard bench press
  • Available in 10, 14, 16, 20, 30, 50, and 100 conductors (26 and 40 to follow)
  • Constructed using 30AWG solid conductor and polyolefin insulator
  • Features programmable differential pairs, grounds and power
  • Flexible and foldable, to accommodate tight spaces without performance loss
  • Outer insulation is laminated with a flexible foil to control impedance at 95Ω

Applications

  • Automated test equipment
  • Communications networking equipment
  • Data center
  • Evaluation kits
  • Industrial
  • Retail
  • Semiconductor Production Equipment (SPE)

I’ve got some new cable that is flat, foldable, and superfast. This isn’t your grandma’s ribbon cable. No way! This cable can push data at 20 gigabits per second. This is 3M’s revolutionary 7700 Series Cable. It has a 30 gauge round conductor, polyolefin insulation, and a flexible foil covering providing a controlled 95Ω impedance. This thin design allows you to maintain high performance signaling with tighter folds than those bulky jacketed shielded cables.

With a recommended minimum bend radius of just 0.075°, you can even do super tight “L” and “S” folds. Try to do that with your conventional cables – and get those speeds! And you get tight pitch terminations too. In fact, 3M’s 7700 series cable can be soldered directly to PCBs at the cable’s 0.025” pitch, or used with 3M’s 451 Series 0.05” pitch IDC connectors for quick installation. With up to 100 conductors at your disposal for differential signal pairs, power, and ground, you can use the 3M brand Cable 7700 series for LVDS applications in automated test equipment, network equipment, and more.
