My boss ordered a whole case of the cheap polyimide tape once. I told him it was only good for taping him to his chair. He laughed. I didn’t. The next day I had a new case of 3M 5413 tape. It consists of a proper DuPont Kapton polyimide film and a silicone adhesive. Together, these provide excellent dimensional stability at temperatures up to 260°C, so the tape doesn’t shrink or warp during soldering. It also doesn’t get soft, providing an excellent release surface with little to no adhesive residue to minimize cleaning and increase productivity. It’s available with widths from 0.25" to 0.625" and has a 7000V dielectric strength for use as insulation if you have some wires or boards that might get too close. One final touch is the polyethylene tape core that won’t deform like a cardboard core, ensuring smooth rolling down to the last strip.
