Phoenix Contact Single Pair Ethernet Connectors

Phoenix Contact Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) Connectors offer parallel, high-performance transmission of data and power via Ethernet through a single double wire and power over data line (PoDL). This new network technology makes consistent IP communication and power supply possible, even within complex industrial applications or in IoT solutions. Single Pair Ethernet enables uniform, Ethernet-based communication from the sensor to the cloud and features key technology for Industry 4.0 and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). The series offers flexibility with ranges of up to 1000M and transmission properties of up to 1Gbps. Phoenix Contact Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) Connectors applications include building and industrial automation, robotics, railway industry, and lighting.

Single Pair Ethernet forms the basis for all ethernet-based communication. It exploits new fields of application and enables smart device communication. Thanks to its great transmission properties, even across long distances, SPE supports future-proof network communication. Following the trend of resource-conserving, miniaturized devices, SPE offers more space for electronics, thanks to space-saving cables.

Standardized pin connector patterns form the basis for the barrier-free networking of the most diverse components, cables, and connectors. Phoenix Contact makes decisive progress with the development of a standardized pin connector pattern with IP20 to IP6x connectors. SPE will replace the classic serial bus system and use a multifunctional pin connector pattern from the office to the sensor.

I know what you're thinking: “Oh great, another ethernet connector.” Not so fast! This is about Phoenix Contact’s connectors and cables for Single Pair Ethernet, or SPE. SPE is a standardized connector designed for use in industrial environments, enabling sensors, actuators, and other equipment to be connected directly to ethernet networks, eliminating the need for fieldbus protocols and gateways.

As the name implies, SPE requires just two wires, compared to eight wires on standard ethernet, resulting in smaller and lighter cabling and connectors while still achieving data rates up to 1 gigabit per second and distances up to 1000 meters. They also support Power over Data Lines technology to deliver up to 50W over the same pair of wires, and SPE can use existing cable infrastructure to connect 4 times as many devices. Phoenix Contact offers latching and threaded single port SPE connectors for IP20 and IP67 environments, enabling the use of SPE in all areas of the factory.
