Yesterday I went out for a winter trail run from the Fern Lake parking area to The Pool in RMNP. Upon arriving at The Pool (2.4 miles from winter parking lot), I was feeling pretty good so I decided to head left and up to Cub Lake. The trail was mostly snowpacked but faded out in parts which led to post-holing. Good thing I knew where I was going as that really helped; I ran by some people who had turned back on that stretch when the trail faded away. Descending down to Cub Lake involved a ton of post-holing. Below Cub, the trail alternated between being hard packed (good for running) and tracks heading off in all directions in soft snow. Whoever set the trail up to Cub did not follow the normal summer route – there were footprints across all 3 meadows and not along the side where the normal trail is. This made for difficult run/walk/post-hole travel but it was nice to be out. Moderate snow was falling most of the time for this 84 minute 6 mile run.
