Today I hiked up to Chasm Junction from the Longs Peak Trailhead in RMNP. The trail is about 75% hardpacked snow / 25% dry for the first half mile, then is all hardpacked snow until the 2 mile mark. I would highly recommend snowshoes starting at the 2 mile mark near treeline (where the winter trail separates from the summer one, and goes steeply up). I didn’t bring mine but wished I did – lots of arduous post-holing above treeline. I wore microspikes the whole time which were helpful on the hard-packed trail parts. I stopped at chasm junction and did not make it to Chasm Lake; there were no tracks or path in the snow beyond there, and it was getting late. Here’s a picture from where I stopped.
