Recovering from a trail running knee injury

Recovering from a trail running knee injury

Apologies for the lack of updates recently. About 7 weeks ago, I ran a 50k trail race with over 4,000 ft of elevation gain (and then descending all the way back down). Although tired at the end, my legs felt fine beyond the normal soreness I would have expected. A few days later, one of my knees was back to normal feeling but the other remained sore – and remained sore – and remained sore – going on for weeks….

Lumpy Ridge Loop with Balanced Rock & Bridal Veil Falls

Lumpy Ridge Loop with Balanced Rock & Bridal Veil Falls

Today I ran the Lumpy Ridge Loop in Rocky Mountain National Park. I started counter-clockwise on the trail around 8:30am and passed quite a few people on the way up to Gem Lake (1.6 miles). I continued on for about 1.2 miles before turning left at a junction to go down to Balanced Rock. Visiting Balanced Rock was exactly 1 mile each way from this junction. Then I continued down to Cow Creek which I quickly passed and began to…

Backpacking to Bluebird Lake – Upper Ouzel Creek Campsite

Backpacking to Bluebird Lake – Upper Ouzel Creek Campsite

This one night backpacking trip took advance planning. We made this reservation request the minute that reservations opened online for backcountry sites in Rocky Mountain National Park back in February or March. Although there were many “maybe’s” from interested friends to join us, it ended up being just two of us to make this trip. We set off from the Wild Basin Trailhead around 4pm… to be continued.

RMNP Six Lakes Loop: Bear, Helene, Odessa, Fern, Cub & Bierstadt

RMNP Six Lakes Loop: Bear, Helene, Odessa, Fern, Cub & Bierstadt

We started on the trail at Bear Lake around 6:50am. The parking lot at Glacier Gorge had just a few spots left when we drove by it at 6:41 – better get there early if you want to park at Glacier Gorge! The trail headed up for a half mile toward Flattop Mountain and we turned left at the Bierstadt junction to keep heading up. About a half mile later, we turned right at the next junction to head toward Lake…

Twin Lakes, Mount Orton, Chiefs Head Peak, Snowbank Lake & Lion Lakes

We started at Wild Basin trailhead in RMNP around 6am and hiked for about a mile before turning right to take the shortcut trail past a string of backcountry campsites. After passing the junction with the trail coming from Ouzel Falls, we continued on toward Thunder Lake for a few hundred yards before reaching Siskin backcountry site. We turned right off-trail just past Siskin and bushwhacked north to Twin Lakes. The lakes were quite hidden within the trees and we…
